Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports statistics on the number of cosmetic procedures performed by its member surgeons. In 2012, the total number of cosmetic treatments and plastic surgeries increased yet again, up 5% from 2011. The report also notes which procedures are the most popular. My patients frequently request these top procedures, and I’d like to take a look at four of them.
BREAST AUGMENTATION
The figures in this new report confirm the continued popularity of breast augmentations; it was the top procedure in 2012 and has been since 2006, when silicone gel implants were re-introduced into the market. It is also one of the most popular procedures in my practice. My patients are interested in tasteful, natural-looking breast enhancement and I’ve always focused on techniques that provide those types of results.
FACELIFT
The facelift is also one of 2012’s top cosmetic surgeries, and in fact showed an increase of 7% over 2011. I am passionate about facial rejuvenation, and I create a unique surgical approach for each patient—one that addresses each individual’s unique needs and specific concerns. My primary aesthetic goal is a relaxed, refreshed result, and my surgical approach is to tighten the deeper tissues of the face but gently re-drape the skin without excessive tightening to create a natural appearance. I often recommend complementing a facelift with skin care, BOTOX®, and dermal fillers for optimum rejuvenation. My patients have found the results of this four-pronged approach to facial rejuvenation very gratifying.
BLEPHAROPLASTY
Many patients come to me with concerns about the tired appearance of their eyes. An eyelid lift—blepharoplasty—can make a significant improvement by making the entire face look more rested and youthful. I offer surgical options that can improve the appearance of the upper lids, the lower lids, or both. The goal is not to alter the shape of the eye, but rather to restore the eyelid to its younger state.
LIPOSUCTION
Men and women alike choose liposuction to remove fat deposits that are out of proportion with the rest of the body. It is perennially one of the most popular body contouring procedures in part because it is so versatile. Liposuction (or liposculpture) can be used for many different areas of the body, from neck and arms to abdomen or thighs, and it is also used to refine the results of other surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck or mommy makeover. Liposuction can produce dramatic changes in the contour of the body.
These four procedures demonstrate the wide range of issues that can be addressed by plastic surgery. I would be happy to suggest a treatment approach if you are interested in any of these popular procedures.
