I am publishing the answers to the quiz about scars early because of a new offer we just received from Mentor that is a great benefit to patients. Mentor has provided a great incentive for patients who would like to exchange their saline breast implants for silicone implants. The offer is available until the end of the year, so watch for the newsletter. If you are not currently receiving it, sign up on the website.
All of the quiz answers are false. Some of you may have guessed that, but many patients I see are unaware of these issues. Vitamin E has never been proven to fade scars in any study, and as many as one third who used it developed a rash. While plastic surgeons are exceptionally well-trained to minimize scarring, a scar’s appearance is primarily related to the patient’s genetics. Some thick scars are keloids, but others are hypertrophic. Keloids do not fade with time, and hypertrophic scars do. Lasers frequently can decrease the color in a scar, but pale scars are not usually improved with a laser. I will provide more in-depth answers and discuss some proven scar minimizing programs in the first e-newsletter of the New Year. Stay tuned!
