I have just returned from the 13th annual facial rejuvenation meeting hosted by the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital in New York City. It was the most informative meeting I have attended in my 14 years in practice.
While those in the media always want to know about the newest procedures and treatments, we discussed at length that the most effective therapies are those that are no longer new, but are still being used, because they have proven to be effective. Unfortunately, due to large marketing budgets afforded by the device companies and their ability to market directly to the consumer, new treatments are frequently on the market before there is proven scientific efficacy. (Think laser liposuction or fat injection for breast augmentation.)
If you want to know if a new treatment is effective, ask a plastic surgeon if she would recommend it to her family!
I take the continuing medical education responsibilities in my practice very seriously, so it was very exciting to be in the same room with some of the most pre-eminent plastic surgeons in the world. Half of the attendees were from other countries. I look forward to continuing to provide the most current techniques and innovative therapies and procedures to my patients. Meetings like these will certainly help me accomplish that goal.
